Are Maltipoos Healthy?

Welcome to my series where I answer the most frequently asked questions.

Let’s dive into why Maltipoos are a genetically healthy breed who generally live longer lives than many other breeds, especially larger breeds.

  1. Generally Healthy: Maltipoos are generally considered healthy dogs, especially when responsibly bred from genetically health-tested parents, like we do at Minnie Malts. As mixed breeds, Minnie Malts tend to have fewer inherited health issues compared to purebred dogs as well as greater genetic diversity and no inbreeding (or line breeding). 1

  2. Long Lifespan: Small breeds, like Maltipoos generally have a longer, healhty life than larger breeds. Maltipoo puppies can live up to 12-15 years or longer, enjoying a fulfilling life with minimal health concerns. 2

  3. Minimal Complications: While no dog breed is entirely free of health risks, Maltipoos have a lower risk of genetic health complications. Because of our commitment to the health and longevity of our puppies at Minnie Malts, we focus on reducing or elimaniating any potential genetic health problems.

So if you are looking for a Maltipoo puppy who will likely have a long, healthy life, a Matlipoo from Minnie Malts may be the best option for you!

Dig A Little Deeper

What do genetics have to do with healthy, longer lives?

With non-invasive Genetic Testing (using a simple cheek swab), we can assess hundreds of potential genetic health risks in our potential parent dogs. Additionally, we analyze the Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) and Genetic Diversity of each dog. Understanding these results is crucial to maintaining Minnie Malts long tradition of healthy Maltipoo puppies. By introducing an additional breed, we can selectively enhance desirable traits while ensuring overall health, and eliminating genetic health conditions that are breed specific, creating healthier puppies with each generation.

Why do Mixed Breeds often cost more to buy?

Mixed breed puppies often command higher prices than purebred puppies. When our puppies are bred thoughtfully, you’ll gain a genetically healthier companion. Our practice of selectively breeding mixed breeds for their desirable and unique traits stems from meticulous pairing selections based on our high standards. The resulting combination of traits and improved health makes Minnie Malts puppies even more perfect.

Why are mixed breeds generally healthier dogs?

Purebred dogs often come from long lineages where inbreeding—specifically, a practice called Line Breeding—is common. In Line Breeding, dogs are intentionally bred with close relatives to achieve desired breed standard traits. While this approach can yield beautiful and wonderful dogs when executed properly, it can also have devastating health consequences for the puppies if not managed carefully. Additionally, purebred dogs can have higher healthcare costs due to genetic disorders. Mixed breeds, like Maltipoos tend to be healthier overall and have lower healthcare costs.
