Overview
Hypoallergenic Coat: Maltipoos are considered hypoallergenic because they shed less and produce fewer allergens. Their fine, single coat generates minimal dander, which is a common trigger for allergies.
Low Shedding: Unlike some other breeds, Maltipoos shed like humans do. This reduces the risk of allergic reactions for sensitive individuals.
Genetic Advantage: At Minnie Malts, every parent dog (except for the cavalier mixes) carries both copies of the low shed gene. This high standard of our partent dogs, gives our puppies a genetic advantage, significantly decreases the risk of allergies in their puppies.
So, if you’re looking for a furry companion without the sneezing and itching, Maltipoos might be the perfect choice!
Dig A Little Deeper
What Causes Pet Allergies?
People can be allergic to dogs due to proteins found in their dander, saliva, and urine. These proteins can trigger an abnormal immune response, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and congestion.
While no dog is entirely free of allergens, hypoallergenic breeds typically generate lower amounts of pet hair dander, saliva, and urine proteins—common triggers for allergies. These breeds often have hair that is more similar to human hair, which sheds less and, as a result, disperses fewer allergens into the environment 1. However, it’s essential to note that there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog. Factors like shedding, dander, and saliva all play a role in allergic reactions, and it varies from person to person 1 2. So, while certain breeds are better suited for allergy sufferers, no guarantees exist that they will result in fewer allergy symptoms for everyone 1.
Why are Maltipoos Considered Hypoallergenic Dogs?
Maltipoos are considered hypoallergenic dogs. They are a cross between a poodle, and a maltese, both of which are considered hypollergenic breeds. Their fur is a single coat with low dander, which helps reduce allergic reactions. Maltipoos are a better choice for allergy sufferers compared to many other breeds. 3 4
What Sets Minnie Malts Maltipoos Apart?
At Minnie Malts, we conduct non-invasive genetic tests (cheek swab) on our breeding pairs to assess the likelihood of shedding in our dogs. With the exception of our cavalier mixes, every parent dog in our breeding progam carries both copies of the low shed gene. This significantly reduces the risk of allergies for our puppies and gives our puppies a genetic advantage other Maltipoo breeders don't offer. This extrememly high standard is another part of what sets Minnie Malts apart.
